Bovines and Bows

Bow River Riparian Fencing Project (2008) "Bovines and Bows"- Jeff Petersen

The Bow River is one of North America's premier trout rivers. The surrounding land is also home to a number of cattle ranches. Cattle tend to gather, graze and drink in localized areas. Their activity creates a number of negative impacts as they trample shoreline vegetation, damage riparian regions leading to increased erosion. The cattle's activity also effects local wildlife populations, both aquatic and terrestrial.

To combat the negative impact of cattle, CCF funds helped install cattle exclusion fencing and an off stream watering system to remove cattle from the banks of the Bow River on specific properties.Eliminating cattle access to the shoreline regions of the Bow River enhances, protects and allows for the rehabilitation of the riparian habitat along these sensitive areas.
