Bow Habitat Station held the Grand Opening of the ‘Kids Can Catch’ Trout Pond, on Saturday, July 7, 2012.

The five speakers for the celebration all participated in the ‘The First Cast’, which kicked off Free Fishing Weekend and National Fishing Week. Speakers included, Deepak Obhrai, Member of Parliament for Calgary East, Colton Quinn, Youth Spokesman, from Sarcee Fish & Game Association, Honourable Diana McQueen, Minister of Environment and Sustainable Resource Development, Ted Morton, Founding Committee Chair and Emcee, Lloyd Horn, Past President, Bow Habitat Station Volunteer Society. “Today’s opening reflects our Government’s commitment to enhancing recreational facilities, while creating jobs, growth, and long-term prosperity,” said MP Obhrai. “Our investment in the Bow Habitat Station will ensure that children and families will be able to enjoy recreational opportunities for years to come.”

Bow Habitat Station, which is operated by Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development, invited Trout Unlimited Canada, along with a host of other conservation organizations to participate in this exciting and eventful day. Visitors had the opportunity to tour the Discovery Centre, Fish Hatchery and Interpretive Wetland, while exhibitors taught children about Alberta’s fish, wildlife and water.  The children were issued passports that encouraged them to explore each exhibitor’s education station before visiting the Trout Pond.

Throughout the day Trout Unlimited Canada’s CEO, Jeff Surtees; Director of Special Events, Don Pike and Director of Conservation Education, Lynn Robb engaged young and old in all things fishy, from fish puzzles to the fishy escapades obstacle course.
