Will Warnock’s project involves the use of genetic markers to describe population dynamics of bull trout in the Oldman River drainage of southern Alberta. Results of this study may elucidate unique populations which should be managed as individual units. In addition, bull trout which continue to become stranded below a recently constructed dam, may be identified to a source population; therefore this study will have immediate and prolonged management benefits for bull trout in the area. The CCFund has provided funding for the genetic analysis of this project.

Specific tests of genetic structuring and sub-structuring between rivers and life history strategy will take place in the Oldman River drainage. Otolith microchemistry will be used to determine lifelong migration histories of individual migrant bull trout. An integrative approach will be taken to determine overall population dynamics in the system with immediate and long-term conservation implications.
